10th Mountain Hut Cancellation Policy: The Full FAQ
Every published detail of 10th Mountain's cancellation and credit policy, nightly rates, and what actually happens to a hut-night after someone cancels.
What actually happens when a hut reservation is canceled
When a guest cancels a 10th Mountain reservation, the hut-night itself returns to the operator's public availability calendar. It does not automatically go to a waitlist or a specific replacement guest; it simply becomes visible as open space for anyone checking the calendar or booking system, first come, first served. The financial outcome for the person who canceled depends entirely on timing: 30 days or more before the trip, and 80 percent of the payment converts to a hut credit for a future trip; inside 30 days, no credit is issued at all.
Nightly rates, for context
Cancellation credits are calculated against the rate actually paid, so it helps to know the published numbers. Most 10th Mountain owned huts cost $40 per person for both Summer 2026 and Winter 2026 to 2027. Fabi Hut is priced as a $240 flat rate in winter. Privately owned system huts vary: Polar Star Inn is $60 per person, Broome Hut is $50 per person, and Jay's Cabin at Shrine Mountain is $55 per person, in both seasons. Flat group rates across the system range from $240 to $600 depending on the hut and season, and children 12 and under get 50 percent off at most huts if claimed at the time of booking.
Frequently asked questions
How much notice do I need to give to get a hut credit?
10th Mountain requires at least 30 days notice before your trip start date. Cancel with that much notice or more and you receive an 80 percent hut credit toward a future trip.
What happens if I cancel less than 30 days before my trip?
No credit is issued. The standard policy states that no credit is available within 30 days of a trip start date, which makes the reservation a full forfeiture at that point.
Is the cancellation credit a cash refund?
No. It is a hut credit applied toward a future 10th Mountain trip, not a refund to your original payment method.
Are there any exceptions to the 30 day rule?
Yes, one documented exception. Braun Hut and Friends Hut guests may cancel on the actual trip date if avalanche danger exceeds their comfort level and still receive a full hut credit for a future trip, though the policy specifies a credit rather than a refund in that case as well.
Does a canceled reservation become available to book immediately?
The operator's public calendar reflects cancellations, but 10th Mountain does not publish a guaranteed update speed. HutAlert exists specifically to catch that update: it establishes a baseline from the calendar and alerts when a hut-night changes from unavailable to available for any of the 14 huts it monitors.
Do children get a discount on hut rates?
Most 10th Mountain owned huts and several privately owned huts offer 50 percent off for children 12 and under, but the discount has to be claimed at the time of reservation.
Where is the official cancellation policy published?
On 10th Mountain's own rates and policies page at huts.org/rates. That page is the source for every figure in this guide and should be checked directly before relying on any specific number, since policies can change.
